My name is Anna Dornier. If you haven’t met me or don’t know who I am, please accept my apologies. At the beginning of this year (2014), my husband and I made the decision to uproot our family from Northern California to live in his hometown in Louisiana for a job opportunity he didn’t have yet. I thank God that we did inspite of that because he just started a job he loves just several weeks ago.
Before I start the post, I want to say Happy Mother’s Day to all our Transformer Mommies! You are the glue that holds your families together.
In today’s post, I would like to talk about living your life by design, and not by default (this might be helpful to those Mommies who sometimes forget to take care of themselves first). What do I mean by that? Many people today may feel that their choices are limited because of their present circumstances. Maybe it’s a job that only makes a certain income, or a growing family that requires more and more of your time, or taking care of a parent who is sick/disabled. I’m here to tell your choices aren’t limited. I’m living proof!
A lot of our clients who have been with us for awhile (I’m talking about since the beginning of Transform FX Fitness) may already know this story or even saw me do some of the things I’m about to tell you.
I started Transform FX Fitness (TFX) because I was miserable with my job. I hated it so much to the point where I would complain to my husband every day I came home from work how much I did. It wasn’t fair to him and I didn’t want that to be the beginning of our young marriage (we were in our first 1-2 years of being married back then).
I worked for a Biotech Company in South San Francisco doing pain research and, later on, cancer research. I hated it for a few things:
- I worked in a lab which meant I didn’t see a lot of people during the day.
- We were doing animal testing which went against the core of everything I believed in (I originally went to college to go to Veterinary school to help animals, not hurt them).
- Last but not the least, I just didn’t look forward to getting out of bed every morning to go to work. That’s important to me!
So, in June of 2009, TFX was born at Pleasant Hill Park. It started as an outdoor bootcamp and I was a one-woman show. I started with our 5:45 am session which we still have until today and eventually added more morning and evening sessions as needed. That meant that I had to wake up early to lead the 5:45 am sessions and work very late to lead the latest session which sometimes ended at 9 pm as I was also training personal training clients back then.
Needless to say, I was working all the time. I was probably working close to 60 hours a week because on top of being the fitness trainer, I was also the bookkeeper, the marketing department, and the sales department. On top of all that, I invested every cent I made back into the business and I didn’t pay myself for the first 3 or so years of the business.
My belief that this business is destined to transform people’s lives had to be strong through all those tough years. Today, it is stronger than ever.
I’m writing this post today because I want to tell you about the huge difference I see in my life today compared to when I first started TFX. Today, I’m living my life by design thanks to God and all the people, our TFX team among others, God has put in my life to make it happen. What I’ve learned is that time is vacuum. It is going to be spent no matter what and if we’re not careful where we spend it, we can end up accomplishing nothing and not getting close to even achieving any of our goals.
I started writing out my priorities in life and made room in my schedule for those priorities in order of importance which is: God, Husband Anthony, Son Lucas, Work (TFX and Advocare), extracurricular activities (working out, charity work, etc.)
This is how my daily schedule looks like for the most part:
5:30 to 6:30 am – Wake up and Read the Bible
6:30 am to 7:30 am – Breakfast with Lucas (Anthony leaves at 5 am so we don’t get to have breakfast with him…yet)
7:30 am to 10 am – Play with Lucas or also give him some alone play time
10 am to 11:30 am – Put Lucas for nap while I workout in the living room, and check e-mail
11:30 to Noon – Lunch with Lucas
Noon to 3:00 pm – A combination of play with Lucas, doing some household chores, and maybe putting him down for a second nap if he lets me…LOL
3:00 pm to 6:00 pm – Work, this is when our baby sitter, my sister-in-law, comes home from high school
6:00 pm to 7:00 pm – Dinner with the family; Anthony or I either whip(s) up dinner real quick as ingredients were already prepped or we eat left overs because we cook 1 dish that usually lasts for a few meals
7:00 pm – Lucas is down for the night
7:00 pm to 8:30 pm – Alone time with Anthony then bed time
We also started doing date night without Lucas once a week and next week, we’re starting a new family tradition of having 1 day of rest and we don’t do anything at all – not even cook or make the bed. There will be a few days when our schedule might be a bit off but any changes will need to be scheduled ahead of time as much as possible. Ideally, I’d like to get my work done earlier in the day because I find that my brain takes awhile to shut down so I can wind down for the night. But, that’s something I can improve on later.
I’m sharing all this with you with the hope that, if you’re not living your life the way you want to live it right now, I want you to know that you too can live your life by design. It may not happen overnight especially if you’re a slow learner like I am but, with enough persistence, the right attitude, and belief in the God, you can do it too!!!
The difference in my life then and my life now is night and day. I am now only working 15 hours a week and I am more focused. When I’m taking care of Lucas, I’m not thinking about work. When I’m working, I’m able to give my 100% towards work.
I’m not going to pretend that I’m the expert in this subject because I’m also still learning a lot myself. But, if you would like get all the tools and develop the skills to live your life by design, I highly recommend you get this audio/video program called, “Time Secrets,” by Dani Johnson. I don’t get anything for recommending her. It is just what helped me live my life my design which is my desire for you as well.
Happy Sunday and I hope you have a great week ahead of you!
