A Few Thoughts on Change

by Anna D

As we enter a new year, I am sure a lot of people are reflecting on their past year and looking to make this year even better just like I am. As some of you may already know, I’ve gone through some major changes/transitions in just the last few weeks. One of them being traveling 2500 miles across the country to Louisiana with a dog and a baby with our recent decision to move to my husband’s hometown . All of the recent changes were for the best of course but change is change – we still have to adapt and there will be some unforeseen challenges we can expect.

As much as I’d like to say that everything’s fine and dandy. I can’t help but feel sad that I am miles away from the life I used to know and also my family who lives in Southern California. But, that feeling too shall pass. I know that.

These recent happenings have made me really think through how tough change can be sometimes. It doesn’t matter whether you’re just trying to get into the habit of something simple like drinking more water throughout the day or something as challenging as uprooting your family to live on the other side of the country to start a new chapter – CHANGE REQUIRES EFFORT. Adapting to change can be tough at first but with enough consistency, the rewards can be tremendous.

So, why is making changes difficult?

One word explains it all – COMFORT. People like to live in their comfort zones. Change is uncomfortable – most of the time. You have to make new connections in your brain and you have to use willpower at first before you can make any change permanent or at least long lasting.

One thing I’ve learned throughout the years of setting goals and the process of achieving them is that we have to be COMFORTABLY UNCOMFORTABLE. This means always challenging ourselves to step out of our comfort zones, taking our game to the next level, and being comfortable there. This means never being satisfied with good enough. This means always thinking, “What can I do better?” or wondering, “How can I improve?”

When we get to the level of being COMFORTABLY UNCOMFORTABLE, magic happens. You achieve things you used to think you can only achieve in your dreams.

The power of HABIT also comes into play here. We are creatures of habit. But, most of the time, when we’re not paying attention, we tend to create the wrong habits. So, really, when we want to change something, no matter what it is, we just need to pay more attention at first, create the process you want to achieve your goal and practice it with as many repetitions as possible. Before long, your change will be effortless and it will become a part of you.

Lastly, making changes is easier when you have support from people around you. Many people fail to make lasting changes because they hang out with the wrong people. I have heard before that we are the average of the 5 people we hang out with – whether that is in the real world or online. I truly believe that. At Transform FX Fitness, we are proud of our community because everyone is so supportive and we all have similar goals. That is powerful and, most of the time, difficult to find! So, if you don’t already have support outside of TFX, it would be good to find it.

As I end this post, I wish that all of you become COMFORTABLY UNCOMFORTABLE to make the change you want to make this year. If you need help, we are just a phone call or e-mail away.

Happy 2014!

Keep moving forward (and take others with you),
